It’s open again. Johnson Drive through downtown Mission was back to four lanes of traffic this morning and most of the construction cones have disappeared. With the temperature hovering below 20 degrees this morning, only the marching band was missing from the city’s barricade breaking celebration.

Demolition crews this week began tearing down buildings on the former Keystone Auto Group property on Johnson Drive, the first step toward construction of the Cornerstone Commons property that will include a Natural Grocers and four new restaurants.

The Shawnee Mission Rotary Club Wednesday revealed a secret that it has kept for months. The club is donating a clock tower to be installed at a prominent spot on the rebuilt Johnson Drive. That part wasn’t a secret. That the clock will be dedicated to long-time Rotarian Dr. John Hollyman was the secret club members had been keeping. Now he knows.

Since the major rebuild started on Mission’s Johnson Drive, concern has been focused on the impact of construction on the business community. Some retailers have relayed that they have seen a palpable drop in business since traffic and parking have been disrupted.
